n/a  Llanganates National Park,
  Condor Biosphere Reserve, Ecuador

Although the Llanganates National Park was created as recently as 1996, it has remained a paper park with little or no installed management.  This is the first year that the Parks in Peril Program will be able to assist park personnel in managing the area. Threats from invasions, illegal logging, and uncontrolled tourism will be focused on and better controlled by local communities.  The park, with partner EcoCiencia, will work to engage local communities in controlling the unauthorized access by people.  Despite a small government budget, there is a great deal of local interest in managing the park to not only protect ecosystems, but to ensure the sustainable management of resources used by local communities. The Llanganates mountain range is historically famous for the fact that Atahualpa, an Incan leader, hid his gold in its dense forest to prevent its capture by the invading Spaniards.  Perhaps if the community park guards are lucky enough to find this gold, they will be able to finance the park’s management in perpetuity.
